Tennessee Handle Reel Attachment

Postby Steve Lammers » Sat Aug 20, 2016 10:33 am

I've got a rod that has a Tennessee style handle for a 7' panfish rod that I'm having difficulty figuring out an efficient way to attach a reel to. In the past, I've use electrical tape to put reels on my ice rods, which isn't much of an issue, as I usually leave the reels on all season. With this rod however, I take the reel off between every trip. I've noticed that the tape tends to pull up bits of the cork every time, leaving pits in the handle. I don't think it's affecting performance, but it looks a little beat up after a while.

1) Have you found a better way (other than electrical tape) to attach a reel to cork Tennessee style handle?

2) If not, is there anything I can use to treat the cork to avoid pulling bits off with the tape?

Since the tape is eating up the cork, why not cover the cork? Lot's of choices in the shrink tube stuff. Or zip ties, might be uncomfortable but cheap enough to try.

Us shrink tube to cover the cork.
Then use nylon tape to secure the reel and apply electrical if you so desire.
