mixing epoxy

Postby Dale Peterson » Tue Sep 15, 2015 3:09 pm

Is 3mls of resin the same as 3 gsm of resin? I mix 3 gsm of resin and 3gsm of hardner and seem to get a slightly sticky finish. Should I be going by volume only?

Absolutely go by volume only! the hardener and resin do not weigh the same for the same volume. If you go by weight you will almost always end up with a finish that won't set up right or will take a very long time.

Reading instructions is a lost art

grams, oz., pounds are all "Parts" just as ml, teaspoons, tablespoons, are all "Parts". Diamond II, Pro Kote, U-40, and Flex Coat say use = parts in their instructions. They should say use = parts by volume. 2ml of hardener weigh 1.8 grams and 2ml of resin weigh 2.2 grams. I redid the wraps with = volume and things came out OK.

Yep, they made an assumption you knew they were talking about volume and offered syringes to do.

Late view. I use Singes, I stopped using measuring cups 20 years ago. When it comes to mixing I never mix less than 3 min. I always radar my containers for 15 seconds, this well help licquifie (SW) both hardener/resin. It makes mixing much easier. never whip just slowly stir. Billy is correct no one reads. Hint if you get to much Hardener your mix well never set up to much Resin your mix well st up to fast. Sorry about the late post
